Croatia's property regulations are due to be relaxed next year allowing citizens of the European Union the same rights as Croats when buying property in the country.
EU citizens will be able to buy real-estate in Croatia on the same basis as Croatians from 1 February 2009, while current restrictions on sales to foreigners will continue to apply to non-EU citizens.
The change is the result of Croatia's negotiations for accession to the EU, during which Croatia agreed to allow free movement of capital from EU member states.
Foreigners can currently purchase real estate in Croatia only by opening companies in Croatia or through Croatian acquaintances.
Within the EU, Malta is the only member state allowed to impose restrictions EU citizens buying property there as it is so small.
