The Official Gazette published on 17 July 2006 the Law on the Amendments to the Law on Ownership and Other Proprietary Rights - which came into effect eight days later after its publication (i.e. 25 July 2006).  The 3rd article stated that foreign physical and legal persons can, unless the law prescribes otherwise, under the presumption of reciprocity acquire ownership of the real estate on the territory of the Republic of Croatia with the consent of the Justice Ministry, and that said consent is an administrative decision.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration no longer has dealings with this matter.
Over 5,600 applications will now be sent back to the newly appointed department in the Ministry of Justice for approval - a move which will allegedly speed up the process for approval.
